This month I had the pleasure of having my mum coming to stay. She has always wanted to experience the real thing and finally made it over for the Christmas markets in Berlin. It was only a short trip but we managed to squeeze in visits to 3 markets and I thought I would share them with you.
We had to start here as it is the one you see on all the brochures, entrance cost 1 euro but this means that the market is enclosed and does not get too busy (generally) although we did go on a weekday and it was drizzly. It is a mix of outdoor stands and marquees with a wide selection of gifts and food which is the most important part of the markets for me! Definitely worth a visit if you’re in Berlin in December.
Tourist central, I must admit but it is nonetheless a beautiful market with one of my favourite food stalls, chicken, veggies and chips in an edible batter bowl, does it get better? No. It also has the advantage of being amongst the shops so we also did a spot of shopping and warmed up in Starbucks during Tabithas nap.
I’ve always wanted to go to this market but for some unknown reason we haven’t yet been in the 6 years living in Berlin. Gladly we saved this market for last, as it is an hour journey from home, and went on a beautifully sunny but crisp day which was just perfect to enjoy the stunning backdrop of the castle. I think it may be my favourite Christmas market and once it gets dark it just gets even more special and it felt just like Christmas too.
So if you visit Berlin during the festive period I would recommend all 3 of these to you.
Have you visited Berlin for the Christmas markets? Which was your favourite? Let me know in the comments.
